Target

Central to our environmental commitment is reaching Net Zero by 2040, and we are proud to be the first company in our sector to have our Science Based Targets (SBTs) validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in May 2023.

Our near-term SBTs are in line with the SBTi’s Net Zero Standard, and we have set out key milestones that we will achieve by 2030 to stay on a 1.5 °C emissions pathway to reach our Net Zero goal. To do this, by 2030 we will have reduced our absolute Scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 46.2%, and absolute Scope 3 emissions by 27.5% from a 2019 base year.

Direct energy use is one of the easiest things for a company to control, and one of the best indicators of its commitment to environmental sustainability. By procuring renewable energy (including green gas), implementing energy efficiency measures, and otherwise seeking to reduce energy usage, we are taking steps not only to decrease our carbon emissions, but also lowering our operating costs. In our base year 2019, 7.6% of the electricity we procured as a business was from renewable sources. We committed to increasing this to 100% by 2030 and have exceeded this target by 6 years. In 2024 we procured 100% of our energy from renewable sources.

As we look to further reduce our operational emissions, we have continued to invest in PHEV/EV vehicles and have implemented a no diesel/petrol company car policy, this has resulted in circa 30% of our company car fleet being EV in 2024.

Through effective waste management and responsible recycling, we can reduce our GHG emissions further as waste sent to landfill has a significantly hire carbon emissions than recycling for example. As a responsible business we follow the steps of the waste hierarchy – favouring prevention, reduction and re-use. We have committed to 95% zero waste to landfill across the business by 2025 and have again exceeded our target. In 2024, we had a landfill diversion rate of 97%.

Health and Safety always has been, and always will be, at the absolute core of our business. Our aim is that our colleagues are safe, valued, supported, developed, and rewarded for the hard work they do for our customers. That is why we strive for a zero RIDDOR environment and publicly report on our safety statistics to keep ourselves accountable, underpinned by our ISO 45001 accreditation. We also have a well established colleague health and well-being strategy with three pillars; financial, physical and mental well-being with a range of initiatives supporting our strategy and colleagues.

Contributing to the local communities we serve and creating Social Value is also a central part of our work as a responsible business. Over the years we have supported communities through our volunteer events, apprenticeship scheme and donations of equipment and financial support. Our first ever social value report has enabled us to quantify these efforts, and in 2024 we generated £34.5m in social & environmental value, £69m in non-local economic benefit and £93.5 in local economic benefit, meaning we generated a total of circa £197m in social value, which we have also mapped to our SDGs.

All of this information and more is available publicly in our annual ESG Impact Report, which uses several reporting frameworks such as GRI, SASB and others. All information is third-party assured through our partners at sustainable advantage, our audit via BAB and is testified by our ISO accreditations.

These are just some of the many targets we have set ourselves to reach Net-Zero by 2040. We believe these goals are crucial to future-proofing our business, the planet and the people and communities we work with.

Our Pledge

HSS ProService has embarked on its journey to reach Net Zero by 2040 in line with the UK governments Net Zero strategy: Build Back Greener. Reducing our carbon emissions to meet the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement of keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees is vital to preserve our biodiversity and ensure future generations benefit from the same opportunities as previous ones did.
