Renting to Net Zero

As the longest established tool hirer in the UK, we’ve been contributing to a circular economy long before it was popularised.

Working with our Supply Chain Partners towards Net Zero

Our marketplace model is inherently sustainable because connecting buyers with sellers to hire, as opposed to purchasing equipment which significantly reduces environmental impact through reduced manufacturing requirements. Effective fleet management by our supplier partners make equipment rental a vital and convenient component in carbon reduction for the UK.

As Europe's largest stand-alone marketplace for building services, we can offer our customers access to the latest and best eco-friendly products as soon as they come to market. We utilise our buying power to prioritise suppliers who offer low-carbon products and encourage sustainable practices across our network. Our platform, ProService Marketplace, provides access to:

  • The widest range of corded and cordless electric power tools across multiple partners.
  • Innovative Hydrogen-Hybrid powered access through our partners at Speedy Hire.
  • Hydrogen powered lighting towers through specialist suppliers such as Taylor Construction Plant.
  • Electric, hybrid and Tier 5 plant equipment through sustainable supply partners such as L Lynch.
  • Generator-free welfare units that eliminate on-site emissions through suppliers such as Liberty Guard.
  • Solar frames and hybrid generator units through suppliers such as Nixon Hire.
  • Effective power distribution systems through partners such as IDE Rentals

We strongly encourage our supply chain partners to provide full LCA data. Until this data becomes more widely available however, we focus on the use and associated transport carbon emissions which relate to Scope 3, categories 9 and 11. Wherever LCA is available, this information supersedes our in-house hybrid calculations.

Growing sustainably

In order to reach our ambitious ESG goals and grow sustainably, some of the key tenets of our strategy are:

  • Invest in processes, technologies, products, or services that reduce the sourcing and use of carbon-based fuels.
  • Seek out and collaborate closer with partners who also adopt the waste hierarchy, by preventing the creation of waste by rehoming products and supporting a circular economy.
  • Seek processes, technologies, products, or services that support biodiversity and healthy, resilient natural habitats, endeavouring or achieve a net positive impact on the planet.
  • Seek out, specify, and purchase products that minimise exposure of Substances of Very High Concern to people and the environment.
  • Consciously design procurement processes and related systems programming to support a diverse supplier base, including small minority owned businesses and social enterprises.
  • Utilise a supplier tiering process whereby all suppliers will be scored on their ESG performance and maturity, quality & service, and complete commercial proposition – incentivising and cooperating with suppliers to improve their performance.
  • Select and promote colleagues/staff on qualifications and merit, without discrimination in relation to sex, gender, race & ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, religion, nationality or disability.
  • Operate with complete transparency to all stakeholders on matters pertaining to practices and strategies that ensure the long-term health of our planet and people.

Helping customers to reduce emissions

The majority of marketplace-related Scope 3 emissions derive from equipment use by customers. To help our customers manage and reduce emissions, we have launched and industry first, free to use, partial Scope 3 Carbon Dashboard.

This pioneering tool enables our customers to track emissions from use of equipment hired through our platform and associated transport. Easy to understand dashboards make quick and easy analysis possible, giving them the ability to make informed decisions to reduce their emissions.

To enhance this further, we have launched our “Greener Alternatives” product prompts, which easily identifies and suggests carbon savings for all customers at scale, whilst tracking carbon savings made and also potential savings to help drive smarter product decisions.

Why it matters

The world is facing a climate emergency. As a responsible company that values business ethics, we see it as an obligation to leave the planet in a better place for the next generation. Every business has a responsbility to create a meaningful plan to reduce its emissions. We must act now and make significant progress in this critical decade.

Ambition

We will demonstrate climate leadership by delivering an ambitious but realistic Net Zero roadmap. We recognise that the decisions we make as a company and a society during this critical decade will impact our trajectory throughout the 21st century and beyond.
